Pedaell HARLOWE complains that William STYDOLFE has failed to provide promised marriage settlement of one thousand pounds and also one hundred pounds for wedding apparel.  William answers that whilst it was extensively discussed no agreement was reached.

11 April 1627

Most humbly complaining showeth unto your good Lordship your daily Orator Pedaell HARLOWE of Grays Inn in the County of Middlesex, Esquire, son and heir of Robert HARLOWE late of the parish of St Gyles without Cripplegate in the county of Middlesex //

That [?] your Orator being by some of the friends and acquaintances of William STYDOLFE esquire [Creditably?] informed that Mary STYDOLFE his only sister had in her own hands or in the hands of her [?] [?] William STYDOLFE being large portion [?] [?] //

and being often moved and persuaded by the said parties to become suitor in the way of marriage unto the said Mary there upon your Orator well  [?] that she the said Mary [?] descended of [?] families and kindred and [?] and [?] many years of her […] //

six hundred twenty and one being to set the said business on [?] and your Orator [?] contending with himself to proceed there into  [approached] of the said William STYDOLFE being her only [?] and [?] in whose house (he then was) and being [?] to [know?] //

of her marriage [?] and [?] and resolving [?] himself to set out nothing [comening?] himself but in mean use and honest manor shortly after his first [resort?] [?] [?] [offering?] himself  unto to the said William STYDOLFE (being executor of the [Will?]  […] //

This defendant saith that the said Bill of Complaint contains in it a long and large discourse of the Complainant meaning his // now wife and of diverse passages meetings and conferences between the said Complainant and his father and now wife // and this defendant about marriage formally in treaty and since said and solemnised between the said Complainant // and his now wife in and amongst other things it is set forth by the complainant by his said Bill that this defendant did // […] after the said marriage affirm and give forth in speeches that the said Complainant wife being this //  defendant’s sister [?] one thousand pounds for her marriage portion and that he would give her one hundred pounds // more for her wedding apparel [?] this defendant doth in no sort acknowledgement to be truth. But saith if the [truth?] // same was but pay of conference and upon several commissions and that there never was any absolute conclusion // or agreement he this defendant there unto nor that he would give other the said one thousand pounds or one hundred // pounds in marriage with his sister or make her portion so much nor any conclusion of the said marriage nor // any per [?] made for this defendant sister by way of jointure or otherwise in case the said marriage would // lake offer [?] [survive] the said complainant nor any estate or livelihood settled or assured by the plaintiffs father // on the [?] his now wife and it also appeared by the plaintiff own [Howing?] that the said marriage was // had premised in this defendant absence in the Cantrie and without his privitie or knowledge and before any // [?] between the complainant and this defendant or the Complainant’s father and this defendant // [?] [?] the same or for [personal?]  Estate or jointure and therefore no reason or equity [?] the complainant [?] // [hon?] seek or demand any relief of this defendant in this Honorable Court for the said sums of one thousand // [pounds?] or one hundred pounds or any part or either of them. And if were true that this defendant either // [?] or did promise to the Complainant in marriage with his sister one thousand pounds and one hundred pounds // either of them or that he would have one thousand pounds portion or one hundred pounds for apparel then // hath the Complainant a good and apt remedy  for the same by his account of the case at the common law and needed // [?] the [?] relief or assurance of this Honourable Court for all [?] and reasons and for [dinease?] other // [?] and apparent imperfections and inefficiencies in the said Bill of Complaint contained this defendant under // favour of this Honorable Court doth demur in law to the Complainant’s said Bill of Complaint // Demanded the Judgement of this Honorable Court if he shall be compelled to make any answer there unto // And Humbly prayeth to be dismissed with his costs and charges herein [susleymed?]//
