AVENELL’S CHARITY –
Reports of the Commissioners Appointed in Pursuance of Acts of Parliament … to Inquire Concerning Charities and Education of the Poor in England and Wales: Arranged in Counties, with Indexes.
Parish of Wanborough Vol. 11 Page 704We have already stated the particulars of this charity in our report of the charities of Puttenham (P636) on reference to which it will be seen that the parish of Wanborough is entitled under the will of Robert AVENELL to the annum sum of £1 out of a house and garden at Bentley in Hampshire (subject to repairs), to be distributed at Christmas by the Church wardens and overseas among such poor of the parish not receiving alms, as shall seem to them proper objects of charity.
The existence of this charity appeared to have been very imperfectly known in the parish of Wanborough and we were unable to ascertain at what period it had been last enjoyed or in what manner it had usually been applied. We have apprised the present overseer of the nature of the charity and we are assured that due diligence shall in future be used in applying for the payment.
What arrears if any may have accrued to the parish since SHRAPNELL became owner of the premises (after deducting the expenses alleged to have been incurred for repairs as we before mention) we shall have as ? stating hereafterin report of the parish of Bentley.
[Addition notes from Bentley entry – AVENELL will dated 10/3/1733 Property of James SHRAPNELL admit to Bentley Manor 27/10/1786?.
