BUDD, William (1734-1784)

Possibly William Budd’s House, Wanborough, Surrey

William BUDD was son John Budd and  inherited the Wanborough farm and appears in the Court Rolls held at Surrey History Centre.

There are two cottages listed in the Court Rental documents, I am not clear if these were sub-let to agricultural labourers working on the farm or two shares in the same house, or different houses one of which is the farm house previously shown.

William seems to have had a keen interest in agriculture.  He was a correspondent of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and he wrote to them on parsnips, and rearing black cattle[1]

Chancery (C10)

Possibly one the most interesting and important document for the history of Wanborough has been found at the National Archives at Kew[1].  John BUDD attempted to pay his debt to Thomas BURNETT of Hornsey later Longford Middlesex but the “Bill of Exchange” “bounced”.

William BUDD seems to have claimed that John’s assets were insufficient to pay his debts and therefore the debtors were unpaid.

Obviously unhappy they sued through the “Kings Bench” court and when paid still did not materialise they sued through Chancery.

The result is we have a detailed “complaint”, “reply” and even more exciting a detailed inventory of John BUDD’s house and farm in Wanborough.
